LAWRENCE GRAMMAR SCHOOL ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of householders and others, for the purpose of hearing the committee's report and financial statement of the Lawrence Grammar School, and for the election of a new committee, was held in the schoolroom, on the evening of Monday last. The attendance was very small. Mr. Jamison was elected chairman, and read the Ordinance pointing out the duties devolving upon the meeting. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. He then called upon Mr. Harrop to road the annual report, from which we glean the following particulars. The progress made during the pas*- year has been more than during any previous year. Several additions and alterations to the school building and master's house were found to be much required, and were therefore executed. The play-ground had been drained, and a pathway gravelled round the school. A neat thorn hedge had also been planted round the school fence. The attendance during the year had been largely on the increase. At the beginning of the year there was an attendance of 90 ; and at the close, the number on the roll was 180. The improvement in tho higher classes has been such as might have been expected from the increased staff of teachers. The examination which terminated on the 23rd Dec, was conducted with more than usual care. The committee recommended to their successors the advisability of conducting four quarterly examinations on a similar plan to that adopted at the last examination. Tlie liberality o£ the Lawrence Corporation and of many friends in presenting valuable prizes, proved a great inducement to the pupils. They would recommend to the now committee tho advisability of enlarging the school building, and of gravelling the -foetpaths outside the playground before tho winter couieS on.

The following ia an abstract of the general statement of receipts aud expenditure for the year. Receipts, L 1202 9d 3d, which is made up as follows : — Foos, L1D1 10s ; Government Subsidy L 427 10s ; Building Fund, L 40 0; Entertainments, Ll2 17s Od ; Fees due, L 73 17s. Expenditure — Salaries, L 574 18s 4a ; Building, L421 14s ; Incidental, LlO4 11s.

The report and balance fclieet were then received and adopted.

The chairman stated that the next business was -the election of a new committee.

Before the new committee was elected, Dr. Stewart desired to propose a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring committee and also to the teacher, for the etliuient manuer in which they had discharged their duties

On the motion of Mr. M'Nicoll, it was agreed that the election be made by ballot.

After the chairman read the 13th clause of the Education Ordinance bearing upon the election of committees, the nominations proceeded. Some 15 or 1G gentlemen were nominated and balloted, ths result being as follows :— Jamison. 12; Dr. Copland, 11; Hciyes, 10; Thompson, 9 ; Harrop, 9 ; Bastings, 8; Campbell, 8; E. Herbert, 8 ; Meuzies, 7 ; Pres3ly, 7 ; M'iviulay, 0 ; Armstrong, 0 ; Gooday, 3; J. Copland, 2. Mr. Pressly withdrew in favor of Rev. Mr. Menzies. The tirst nine gentlemen were therefore declared duly elected. The chairman said that concluded the business of the meeting, but before separating he had to apologise for the absence of Mr. -Bastings and Mr. Hayes — the one being away from town on business, and the other being indisposed. He wished the members of the new committee to remain after the general meeting for a few minutes. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
