WETHERSTONES SPORTS.

The annual sports at Wetherstones Flat took place on Monday and Tuesday last, in the presence of a large crowd of spectators. The number present was considerably in excess of last year, and the sports were quite up to those of former times. There was a large muster of ladies present, and we fancy that if in anything, there was a marked improvment in the rig-out of all sorts and conditions of the people. The weather could not have been better had it been specially appointed for the enjoyment of the sports, and everything went off swimingly. ""There were three booths on the ground, viz : — The Washington, (Mr. M'BrideJ, the Golden Age, (Mr. Cranley), and the Eureka, (Mr. Rheuby's), and from all we could observe, they were each well patronised. The following were the events of the FIRST DAY. Running High Leap : 3 entries (4ft. 10in.)— M'Neil, 1 ; Stapleton, 2. Quoits : 10 entries (21 yards). — Coutts, 1 ; Barkman, 2. "Wrestling (Cornish and Devon). — J. Tyson, 1. Boy's Handicap "Race (150 yards) under nine years : 10 entries. — Hay, 1 ; Lyons, 2 : Joyce, 3. Vaulting with the pole : 6 entries. — Drysdale and Craig divided at Bft. 3in. Putting the 18 to 201 b. stone : 4 entries. — Craig, 1 ; Grant, 2. Sack Hurdle Race : 4 entries. — T. Neil, i . Craig, 2. 200 Yards Flat Race : Gentries. — Jacob Davison, 1 ; Dowries, 2 ; M'Neil, 3. I There were no entries for darning. The wrestling was the most unsatisfactory of the sports. The most of the competitors being evidently afraid of J. Tyson's superior skill. The vaulting and the 200 yards race were very well con-

tested, and considerable amusement \v,is created by the sack hurdle race. SECOND DAY. Running Hop, Step, and Jump : 4 entries. — M'Neil, 1 ; Drysdale, 2. Boy's Handicap (300 yards) under 14 years : 8 entries. — .Noakes, 1 ; Lyons, 2. Throwing the 14lb. stone (Irish style) : 3 entries.— Doyle, 1 ; Grant, 2. 300 Yards Hurdle Race, with water jump : 4 entries. — Stapleton, 1 ; Medment, 2. Hornpipe Dancing. — Davison, 1 ; Coxon, 2. Three Legged Race : 6 entries. — Divided equally amongst the six. Wrestling (Cumberland) : 6 entries. — Russell, 1 ; Craig, 2. 150 yards flat race for old buffers over 35 : 3 entries. — Coxon, 1 ; Hart, 2. Walking Match (two miles) : 4 entries. — Judgment deferred. 250 Yards Handicap Race : 7 entries. — Stapleton, 1 ; Medment, 2. Catching the Greasy Pig. — Caught by Richard Tyson.
