TUAPEKA ATHEÆNUM. ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting of subscribers was held in the hall on Thursday last, when there was but a poor attendance. Mr. J. C. Brown, president, occupied the chair. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were then read and confirmed ; after which, the chairman called upon the secretary to read the annual report, which was as follows :

Your committee, in submitting the fifth annual report for the year ending 12th October, 1870, congratulate you on the continued prosperity and increasing usefulness and efficiency of this institution. The debt on the building at the commencement of the year was £183 Bs. The Government endowment sections at the corner of Gabriels road were leased for 99 years, for which the sum of £75 was received, which amount, with other receipts, reduced the debt on the building to £34 11s. 6d. Your committee are happy to observe that the subscribers are availing themselves of the great advantages of the reading room, which is supplied every English mail with eight weekly and eighteen monthly papers and magazines ; also the Australasian, the Evangelist, Gazettes, Parliamentary Papers, Hansards, proceedings of the House of Representatives and the Provincial Council, as well as a large number of New Zealand newspapers, files being kept of the following, viz. : — Otago Daily Times, Tuapeka Times, Bruce Standard, Bruce Herald, Cromwell Argus, Southland Weekly News, Mount Ida Chronicle, Waikouaiti Herald, and the Auckland Weeekly Herald. The number of subscribers now on the roll is 55, and the number of books circulated during the past year shows an increase over any previous year, being 1716 volumes, besides a large number of periodicals. Your committee beg to inform you that they expect a large consignment of books very shortly, a list having been forwarded to the secretary of the Education Board of those works which they thought necessary to have added to the library. In conclusion your committee would recommend the great necessity which exists for a large addition to the library of many standard works of recent date, which are much enquired after, and the urgent necessity for an anti-room at the back of the building, and the advisability of getting the ground fenced and planted with shrubs. After being fully discussed, Mr. Armstrong proposed, and Dr. Halley seconded, the adoption of the report and statement. — Carried. Mr. Adams proposed, and Dr. Halley seconded, that the financial statement be published. — Carried. Mr. Adams proposed, and Mr. Armstrong seconded, that the committee consist of seven members, three to form a quorum. — Carried. Mr. Jamison proposed, and Mr. Buck seconded, that the secretary's salary be increased. — Carried. Mr. J. C. Brown was again elected President of the institution for the ensuing twelve months, and the following gentlemen were elected a committee :—: — Messrs. Buck, Downes, Stenhouse, Armstrong, Forbes, Simpson, and Dr. Halley. This closed the business of the meeting.
