TAPANUI MAIL.

(To the Editor of the Txuipeka Times.) Sir,— Having been from home, I did not see your paper of the llth August until some time after its publication, otherwise I would have long ago denied in toto the charges made against me by your Tapanui Correspondent in the carrying out of my mail contract. The first thing he refers to is the irregular manner in which the mails arrive. On two or three occasions the mail has lieen late from no fault of mine. The boy sometimes did not get the mail at the Beaumont till about ten o'clock on Saturday morning, and, as a matter of course, he could not reach Tapanui at the proper time. Beyond that, I believe the mail has been as regular as any in Otago. Then, with regard to the horses, I can say, without fear of contradiction, that I have not had a single "screw" on the mail, and always have v^«"g horses engaged for it. Th°"> as regards the imprudence of outrusting the mail to a mere child, * may sa V that child, as he ia about sixteen years of age, has more ' 'savey" than hundreds ten years older — perhaps more than your correspondent. Then, with regard to the newspapers being received in a condition totally unfit to read, I regret this very much, but the winter has been so wet and stormy that I will defy anybody to keep the mail dry going over the Blue Mountains iv such stormyweather. Perhaps the next time your correspondent favours you with one of his silly yarns, he will adhere more to the truth than he has done on the occasion referred to. — I am, &c, Alexander Matheso'S'.
