THE HUNDRED-MILE RACE BET\Vj<,i£N r BAUMAID .v. C'>L -NiCL (To the EJilur of the Tuapeka Tim:s.) ■" ik., — In your i&aue of die 18th ult. yo'i published an extinct oi a hundredmile race which occupied the r>]. ic of ten and a-half hours, giving an average of nine miles per hour. JNow, I beg leave to state that I have personal knowledge of a gentleman residing in this diitrict, leaving Coal Creek, and riding through to the Dunstan, having to wait on his up journey to arouse the puntman, and after his arrival at Clyde, having to awake several persons in order to find Dr. Thompson's residence, waiting while that gentleman dressed, repairing with him to the druggist's, again on his return to the river having to awaken the puntman, and eventually reaching Coal Creek after an absence of six hours ; the distance travelled being fully sixty miles. This, if we allow, at the very least, an hour for stoppages, &c , the speed at which my friend (who performed this journey in the cause of a suffering female) was twelve miles an hour, and this with a horae in constant work, not trained to racing. This, Mr. Editor, I think is a proof sufficiently strong that our New Zealand horses are superior to those on the other side. — I am, &c, Vindux. Coal Creek, Teviot, August 23
