BALCLUTHA.

(From our own Correspondent.)

It is surprising haw so many adventurers find the ways and means to correspond in the semi-theatrical visits the up-country townships are this season subjected to. Never before have so large a number penetrated to - our city by the river, and I think that the reception given to the Variety Troupe should cause other stragglers — whether disciples of Momus or Terpsichore — to consider before thrice repeating their most favourite entertainments at the Clutha Ferry. It is written that on the third night no one put in mi appearance, but it is a well known fact that after the second nights proceedings very few intended to return, and it may be asked why in the name of common sense is it necessary to specially license a spirituous liquor bar in connection with these assemblies. We have thi'ee hotels in Balclutha — enough surely to supply the legitimate wants of the inhabitants and all comers ; and yet, when any "mountebank" or "charlatan" appears with startling posters, another special public house is duly licensed. If magistrates possess such powers, they ought to exercise greater judgment in using them. A Property Investment Society, recently formed here, seems in a fair way of prospering, at least as far as the launching is concerned. I am informed that upwards of four hundred shares have been already applied for.

I am afraid the Meat Preserving Company must stand in abeyance for some time yet.

Some of the flax mills have resumed operations, and have certainly improved greatly during the last few months.
