DALHOUSIE.
(From a Correspondent.)
Things are looking up "Down at the Mouth." Two parties applying for hotel licenses ; one, if not two, stores about to be erected ; a post office in expectancy ; a large supply of water for gold mining purposes also iv. expectancy, and otlier improvements ad libitum. The hotels, I believe, to be a step in the right direction, as we shall then be in a position to accommodate any of your good townspeople who may pay us a, visit during the summer months. One thing 1 am certain of, they could not go to many prettier places in Otago. The Beaumont I consider very small potatoes as compared to this, and as we have the promise of the Government to do something toward improving our roads, I believe this will be the direction most of your holiday makers and pleasure seekers will steer- to find that relaxation of mind aud body wliich their over-taxed energies must require.
Mr. Nicolson, of the survey office, lias been down offering town sections for sale at the very moderate xipset price of £5 per quarter acre, but through some unaccountable reason there were not many sold. I think if the Government were to reduce the upset price to £2 per section, Mr. Nicholson would not so often have the trouble of riding down here for nothing. The fact of the matter is, the township is in the wrong place for present requirements, and any one investing would only do so with an eye to the future, when the proposed Government punt is put on the river at the surveyed township.
Our shilling readings are going off very well, and when the weather gets a little more settled, I think the attendance will improve. Mr. lloscoe has this weeks programme in hand, and from the number of names on it, 1 think there will be good value for the money. If the Lawrenceites intend getting up a subscription lisc to get the " Old SoldierY likeness painted (in some sanguinary colour) or to present him with some testimonial "In memoriam," we will be most happy to add our mite, as we consider such an intelligent farm labourer, who i 3 so well fitted to fill his present honourable, manly, and straightforward occupation, should meet with his reward.
