AMALGAMATION OF RACES (NOT WATER RACES.
(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.) Sir, — The introduction of the Mongolian race into Otaga has brought about a state of things which was but little thought of at the time of their arrival — namely, their intermixture with the daiighters of the soil. When the Chinamen first made their appearance, it was believed that the daughters of New Zealand had too much self-respect — too much, of the spirit of their ancestors, than unite themselves with a race so inferior, but on this point we have been deceived. It is well known that some months ago one of such unions took place— under what circumstances I need not recall. This week another union of a like nature was sought to be consummated, but for a time the strong arm of the law has put a stop it, as the subject is still a mere child, who it seems was formerly in the Benevolent Asylum. From circumstances which have transpired, it seems that the young girl lately married to one of the Chinamen, has been to a certain extent contributing to this second affair, as the girl was taken by the police from her house at the Chinese Camp, and it seems also used that weapon which the female sex sometimes use to good purpose. It la indeed painful to look at this matter with anything but everlasting regret ; to see our daughters thus inclining to unions which can only end in social degradation and ruin. Now, the question arises, can such unions be prevented ? I think they can if the praper means is used ; but whilst there are in our midst, people who harbour Chinese and encourage such practices, and supply them with refreshments ad libitum, and, who at times, keep no proper surveillance or control over their servants, but apparently connive and encourage their intercourse, our labour will be lost. The feeling of the community generally must be 3trongly worked upon by placing the bare facts of the case before them, and by a general, genuine burst of reprobation, hold up to detestation any or all who directly or indirectly aid or assist in any way such, unions. — J. am, &c, ' Patbb.
