SABBATH SCHOOLS.

| (To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.) Sir, — I notice in a report of the Presbyterian soiree at the Blue Spur, Mr. Stenhouse stated he had the pleasure of starting the first Sabbath School in Lawrence. Now, whilst I have no wish to detract from Mr. Stenhouse any of the credit due to him for his painstaking perseverance in all matters connected with the education and moral improvements of the young since he came to this district, I certainly must demur to such a statement going forth unchallenged. Surely Mr. Stenhouse must remember that when he came to Lawrence he found a Sabbath School in active operation, numbering some forty scholars, attended to by some excellent ladies, one of whom is still engaged in the work, and has never for a moment relaxed her efforts in the promotion of the welfare of the young, and also by several gentlemen who came from the Blue Spur every Sabbath to assist in the conducting of the School. I might also state, in justice to others, that a school was held in a building which Mr. Stenhouse never saw, long before the schoolhouse on the hill wa3 built. It will thus be apparent that the children of the Tuapeka district hays not been so neglected, or so destitute of. religious instruction as the remark of Mr. Stenhouse would lead people at a distance to infer. At the same time I must say it gives me unmitigated pleasure to observe the attention now devoted to the religious improvement of the rising generation. — I am, &c, W. Toichbe.
