THE EXTENDED MUNICIPAL SYSTEM.

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times). Sir, — In perusing your issue of the 16th instant, I was surprised to see that his Worship the Mayor of Lawrence seems so anxious to include Wetherstones as a borough under the Municipal Corporations Act, ] 867. Now, Mr. Editor, T would ask you if any Municipal Council has the power to include a town, say two miles distant from said municipality, without the consent of the inhabitants? If they have not, I can take it upon myself to say, for at least three-fourths of the inhabitants of Wetherstones, that they would be entirely opposed to have any connection with Lawrence in municipal affairs. In fact, if there are any further steps taken by the Council, I shall take it upon myself to call a meeting of the inhabitants to protest against it, when I feel positive that there will not be three persons who will vote for the connection. Of course^ Mr. Editor, I am only speaking as an inhabitant of Wetherstones. — I am, &c, Cvi Bono. Wetherstones, 22nd June, 1870. [The report we gave of the remarks referred to, as made oy the Mayor, was so meagre that it would be unfair were wo to insert the above letter without stating our conviction that when "Cvi Bono" becomes acquainted with the benefits to be derived by Wetherstones and the district generally by an extension of the municipal system, he will change his opinion regarding the subject. A few of these advantages we shall endeavour to lay before our readers next week. — Ed. T.T.]
