LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of the Town Council took place in the Chambers on Monday evening. Present : Councillors Mears, Harrop, Walker, Coverlid, and Herbert. In the absence of the Mayor, Cr. Mears was called to the' chair. The minutes of previotis meeting were read and confirmed. The following accounts were referred to the Finance and public works Committees : J Reid (labour) - -£1 14 0 - Sheefiix Water Company * (water to March, 1&70 - 26 0 0 " , "Tuapeka Tpnes-" (advertising) - - - 1 1 9 J, Tuckey (labour) - - 3 5 0 A petition wa3 presented from Messrs. Mouat, Armstrong, Tuckey, Vye, Robertson, andothers, drawing the attention of ; the Council to the bad state of the footpath between Whitehaven-s"treet and Co-lonsay-street, and the necessity for repairs. The petition was received and open for discussion. Cr. Coverlid testified to the justice of the complaint, and expressed his belief that the matter could, be' remedied at a small cost. He had, at. "a previous meetting of the Council, amoved a resolution, which was passed, that a footpath should be formed from Colonsay-street to the
Hospital, but knowing the funds at the disposal of the Council were limited, had not pushed the matter. Cr. Harrop suggested that as the main road had not been made the full width by the Government, the Town Clerk should be instructed to write the Government, asking that to be done at once* As the line of footpath at present stood, it would be necessary to build it up, the Water being so strong in that part in time of flood. The Chairman said the work was a very necessary one, as it was the road to the Hospital. Referred to Public Works Committee. An application Was read from J. 0. Roberts to mine on his. property on the Tuapeka Creek, the site of his old building. It appeared that a previous application had been made by Read and party to mine on the same ground "applied for by Mr. Roberts, and the question was raised as to which application should have the preference. One or two of the Councillors thought it wa.s a matter the Council had nothing to do with, if Mr. Roberts had paid his rates up. tp August. Had the section been freehold, as a matter of course, the Council could not have interfered in any way, but its situation pn the town belt reserve left it open for discussion. A proposition w,as made by Cr. Coverlid, seconded by Cr. Herbert, to refer the applications to the Public Works Committee, to be settled by them. Cr. Walker was of opinion that the a .m -i ---v /■lianr.c.^ ~t ±i*~ — +*■"■» 0+ once, and moved an amendment to that effect, which was seconded by Cr. Harrop. On a show of hands there were two for and two against. The Chairman gave his casting vote for the original motion. Cr. Coverlid moved that the Legislative and Rate Committee bring up a report at next meeting of all the sections in the Municipality which have not been rated, with their ideas as to what action should be taken in the matter. Cr. Harrop seconded. Carried. With regard to the footpath in Ross Place, near Mr. Wootton's, which Was in a dangerous state, the Town Crerk stated that he had not received any official reply. Mr. Smail, had told him that being a footpath the Government would not interfere with it. Cr. Harrop moved that the Town Clerk write urging the Government to do something to the footpath in question^ as it was a Government contract ; also, that their attention be drawn to the culvert in Ross Place, near Messrs. Meyers, which had fallen in. Cr. Walker reported favourably upon the Kilmarnock-street contract, which was progressing rapidly. Several other matters were refelTed to, but left over for discussion to next Council meeting. The Council then adjourned.
