The Puapeka Times. THURSDAY, MAY. 19, 1870. "Measures, not Men."

Mr. L. C. Batkd has been appointed gold receiver for Cromwell. On dit there is n, " Punch "' to be. established in Wellington, with Mr. Haughfcon as editor. . On Saturday and Monday evenings the Rainfordjmd" Western Christy Minstrels delighted large audiences in the Tuapeka Athenamm by their humourous entertainment. From an advertisement It will be noticed that legal steps will be taken by the Inspector ,of the TUapeka and Waitahuua Depasturing 'Districts, unless the cattle. and sheep aSSesyment is paid before a certain date. > • " ... the Educational Report of Mr. Hislop we are glad- 'to observe that Wethirstones' school figures so well. The attendance is the • largest of any side, school in Otago. There are' 17 district 'schools wit]\ a larger attendance, but there are 27 whose attendance is smaller. A PETITION to. the Superintendent, to get a* sum of mon&> placed on the estimates for the road to Smith's Bush and Tuapeka Mouth, is being numerously signed. The road at present, between Mr. Docherty's and Mr. Fitzgerald's, is in a most wretched state, ard every day is becoming worse. As the whole population of the district are dependent on that road for firewood, we trust the petition, which; is a very moderate one, will be signed by alarge number of residents, »nS .forwarded without delay. If that road had a J few hundred pounds laid out on it, goods could be delivered at Tuapeka Mouth by the steamer, and sent up to Lawrence at a >much cheapei rate than by the main road.

The attention of the Government requires to be drawn to the bridge at the mouth of the Tuapeka River, which, if not properly stayed from the Molyneux side, will, we venture to predict, be seen floating down the river the next flood. The bridge is actually twisted in suc)i a manner as to make the above no prophecy but a plain Certainty. The usual annual meeting of Justices for this district took place in the Court House, Lawrence, on Tuesday las^, after the business of th.c R.^.'s C,ourt was finished. Presently. %. Simpson, Esq., R.M., J. Herbert, Esq., J.P., and Dr. Stewart, J.P. After settling the rota of attendance for the ensuing year, W. L. Simpson, Esq., R.M., Was appointed chairman. IF we mistake not the Town Council passed a resolution for the formation of a footpath in Whitehaven : street, from the corner of Colonsaystreet to the Hospital. If the funds at tihe disposal of the Council will admit of it, this is a work which they should carry out at once. Those ditches on each side of the main road are not only dangerous, but left in their open state, they are the receptacle of all kinds of filth. We regret that we "are compelled to hold over, through pressure on our space, the report of the case, J. C. Roberts v. Win. Mt3ars, Which •was heard in the Court House before W. L. Simpson, Esq., R.M., and J. Herbert, Esq., J. P., on Tuesday last. We regret this the more, as the case is a very spicy one, and would afford a deal of amusement to the general reader ' We promise that it shall appear in The Rev. ftTr. Menzies has liberally volunteered to open an evening class, two nights « week, during the winter months, for the purpose of teaching, gratuitously, the elementary as well as advanced branches of education, if a suitable place, with and lights, is provided. We trust that some of our young friends, who are engaged at work during the day time, will bestir themselves, and not lose this excellent opportunity of improving themselves. In the Provincial Council on Monday the Committee of Supply passed the item of £12,000 for immigration after considerable discussion ; this was the the only business of any consideration which occupi d the House. On Tuesday, Mr. Thomson again raised the question of the Otago Hundreds Regulation Act, and the time of the Council both at its morning and evening sitting, was occupied discussing the subject, but throwing no fu-Jtiier lie;ht upon it. By telegram we learn that' in the Council yesterday it ■ was moved that the harbour should be dredged ■to allow larger vessels to enter it ; and Mr. Ashcroft's resolution, affirming the desirability ■ of the union of Otago with Canterbury, was carried. A VERY handsome testimonial was presented to P.G. Bro. John Dunne— who is expected to leave Waipori shortly— by the members of the Loyal Waipori Lodge, in recognition of his valuable services in promoting and furthering the principles of Oddfellowship in that district. The presentation took place in the Oddfellows Hall, on the evening of Friday, 6th iiibt. ; The . testimonial consisted of a tastefully designed and beautifully executed gold mediil, weighing about one ounce, having on one side the heart and hand with the symbol, "Faith, Hope, and Charity," and on tkc ottoeS: side, "Friendship, Love, and Truth," the motto of the order together with the following inscription :—" Presented to P.G. John Dunne by the officers and brothers of tide Loyal Waipori Lodge, a.d. 1870." The design, which has been greatly admired, was supplied by one of the brothers of the Lodge. N.G. Cox, in presenting it to, the worthy brother, paid him a very high complement for his exertions in the good cause, and also for the very able manner in which he had filled the several offices he has held- in the Lodge, and, in concluding a very eloquent , speech, conveyed to him the Wishes of the , Lodge for his future welfare. P.G. Bro. Dunne having returned thanks in a very feeling minner, brought the proceedings to a close. The anniversary of the Manchester Unity Loyal Waitahuna Lodge, and Court Havelock, A.0.F., were celebrated in the Assembly Room, Waitahuna, on the evening of TkutSdAy last, by a soiree, concert, and ball. The room was beautifully decorated for the occasion with the Oddfellows mottoes, which were in pink letters on a white ground, with a neat border of fern leaves. The numbei that sat down to tea was estimated at 250. Besides some fourteen gentlemen from the Tuapeka Lodge, there were several from the Blue Spur and Tokonsairiro. After the tables were cleared, and the seats arranged, Bro. Eadie, N.G., took the chair, and after the usual toasts, " The Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows," and the "Forester's Fire," were given, the glee club opened the concert foy} singing "Drink to me only with thine eyes." Messrs. Burton and Bayliss officiatei.'at %fee Wa?ra<3imnn. The singing of Messrs. Ritson and Devonshire in character was much applauded. The ball which followed was a great success, and in spite of the overcrowded state of the room, Mr. Ritson, M.C,, kept good order, and the dancing went off well. The .ladies deserved great praise for the part they took in the tea arrangements. We regret that owing to a pressure of p.dvertisemerits we cannot insert the more lengthened report which we had written of this, the most : successful anniversary of the kind which has taken place in the district.
