THE TOWN COUNCIL AND THEIR ACTIONS.

(To tlye Editor of the Tuapeka Times.) Sih, — T know you are always willing to give your aid in showing up any hole , and corner work, and in holding up to j scorn public men who are known to be deviating from the straight course of public duty. Well, sir, I hear the last meeting of our. Town Council was rather a.n interesting one, lam informed that two parties wrote to the. Council, asking permission to mine on a piece of land occupied by J. C. Roberts, who at present is removing his hotel to Ross Place. It seems Mr. Roberts "is one of the two applicants, and he is simply asking the Council^ "permission to mine on his own property for which he has paid rates tip to the beginning of August. The otherparty who applied for the ground, I believe, pleads*that Major Croker had given, him permission, verJbaUy that he could mine on. tKe ground referred to when the house was, remoyed. But surely such a plea as that could hav.e no weight with the Council,. The igrotind*, to all intents and purposes, is ' possessed by Mr. Roberts, who has not only paid his rates, but hokis a miners' right. And still for all this oUr great and talented councillors balk dealing with the matter in open council, and Cr. Coverlid proposes, seconded by Cr. Herbert/ that the matter be^ rpiepea] to the Public Works Committed, k& itTequires more consideration. But I fear. it, will get very fittle consideration from' that committee. The Mayor has already given his consent to the invading party ; and'asto,Cr. Mears, it is well known that a wide difference exists between him and the rightful owner of. the plps of ground. As Cr. Walker is t}\e only other member of the Works Committee, matters can be easily summed up and settled, even without a meeting. I und^stand that the last nanied gentleman proposed as amendment, that the Council deal with the matter^ and I suppose that he could either detect' the thin skin of Crs. Coverlid and Herbert, or saw that justice was not likely %o be meeted out by the Pubjic Works" Committee.—l am, &c v A Digoeßp
