CROMWELL.
(From our Oion Correspondent). May 3, 1870. The weather here for the last fortnight has been very cold, and the hills in the neighbourhood are covered with snow — pretty sure signs that the winter has set in very early this year. In mining matters I have not much to report. The reefs at Bendigo Gully are turning out satisfactoiy. A crushing of 20 tons from Colclough's, at the Aurora battery, yielded about 2£ ounces to the ton. The Cromwell Co. (Logan and Co.) are getting out some very good stone, and I believe anticipate a fair crushing next time. The sluicers in the district are hard at work, the late raiu giving them plenty of water. Tho property of the late Mr. Garret, wliich consisted of shares in the Cromwell, Golden Link, and Alta companies, were sold by auction last Thursday, and realised very good prices, amounting in the aggregate to about £3000. Mr. W. J. Barry was the auctioneer. The Warden's and Resident Magistrate's Courts were held last Wednesday, and a good deal of business was transacted. I believe Mr. R. B. Baird, who has been acting-clerk of the court here for some time, is likely to be appointed gold receiver and clerk. This will bs a great boon to the inhabitants of the district, as no doubt Mr. Baird will have more extended powers, the Warden only visiting here fortnightly. The appointment of Mr. Baird will give satisfaction, as he is generally esteemed for his obliging and courteous manner. 1 have to record a very sudden death (although expected for some time), wliich took place here a fortnight ago. I allude to the " Cromwell Guardian," which has, after a brief struggling existence, collapsed, and the "Cromwell Argus" now holds undisputed sway. Many of your readers will no doubt be glad to hear that the proprietors of the latter journal, Messi-s. Matthews and Fenwick, have, by their energetic and straightforward conduct, gained the esteem and good will of the whole district, and promise, if they go on as they have commenced, to have a long and prosperous career. A very clever capture was made at the Nevis a few days ago, by Constable M'Gann, of Queenstown, and John Ah Loo, Chinese interpreter, who arrested a Chinaman there for selling spurious gold to a storekeeper at the Cardrona. The individual has been duly committed for trial.
