LAWRENCE' TOWN COUNCIL.
The Town Council met on Wednesday the 30th hist.
Present — The Mayor, and Crs. Coverlid, Walker, and iMears, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The only correspondence was a letter from the proprietors of the Tuapjeka Titles, asking the Council, if possible, to alter their day of meeting to suit the altered day of publication of the paper. There was no objection offered to the request, and after some conversation as to the most suitable day for the meeting, it was moved, "That, on their rising, the Council adjourn till next Monday fortnight, and in future meet every alternate Monday, the Town Clerk to. intimate the same to the members of Council."
There was no accounts to be passed.
Financial Report, held over from last meeting, was still further held over, owing to so few of the Councillors being pesent. Cr. Mears remarked, with reference to the public works, Mr. Nichols had been the successful tenderer at £6 for all works of immediate importance in the town. Mr. Nichols was proceeding with the works, and he had no doubt they would all be completed before next Council night. The Mayor said that when in town the previo\is week he called upon Mr. Reid, the Secretary for Lands and works, with reference to the Beaumont Hill,, and expressed to him his surpriso that he did not purpose fulfilling his promise with regard to the Switzers road. Mi\ Reid assured him that the Beaumont Hill gradient would b& at once reduced, and informed him that tenders to complete the formation of the road from Manuka Creek to Waitahuna were about to be called.
Cr. Coverlid drew the attention of the Council to. the- main Beaumont road, near the boundary of the Municipality, as the same was dangerous. Pie embodied the matter in a resolution instructing the Town Clerk to write to the Secretary of Lands and Works, showing the necessity of surface men making the necessary repairs. Second and carried. The bad state of Kilmarnock-street was referred to. Cr. Walker moved in the matter some months ago, but nothing was done. For a present outlay of £20, it was stated double the amount might ultimately be saved. Cr Walker moved that the Town Council be instructed to visit the street, and after acquainting himself with its requirements, call for tenders for its repair. Seconded by Cr. Mears, and earned. The areas of last years' rates were referred to, when the Town Clerk stated that about £7 of the amount had recently been collected.
The Council then adjourned till Monday fortnight, the 18th April.
