BOARD OF WARDENS.
A meeting of the above Board was held in the Commercial Hotel on Tuesday evening. Present — Mr. Browne, (Chairman), and Messrs. Polson, "Wilson, Eobertson, Hunter, Edie, Dewes, and Grascoigne (Secretary.) The meeting had met chiefly for granting applications for the depasturing of cattle for the ensuing six months. Before proceeding to consider the applications, Mr. Edie presented the following petition on behalf of several Waitahuna residents :—: — ,To the. Board of Wardens, &c, We, the undersigned cattle owner 3,
and others residing in Waitahuna Gully, beg to represent to you that sheep frequently cross the boundary and graze on the slopes on the north side of the Waitahuna Gully, and thereby deprive local stcck of necessary pasture.
We therefore respectfully request that you will take means to remedy such grievance.
The Board, after giving the petition due consideration, unanimously pnssedv tho following resolution : — " That the boundary be removed from the slopes of "Waitahuna to Blythe's Gully." A copy of the letter which Mr. Poison was desired to forward to the Provincial Treasurer, was then read, which was as follows :—: —
Waitahuna, Feb. 28, 1870. The Provincial Treasurer, Dunedin.
Sir, — I am instructed by the Board of Wardens, of the Tuapeka Depasturing District, to write to you, requesting that a small potion (say ten pounds) of the assessment money, levied in this district, be placed at the disposal of the Board in order to reimburse the secretary for his outlay in stationery, postage, advertisements, and other expenses connected with the working of the Board.
It is no doubt true that the Government has hitherto paid some of these expenses, after considerable delay, on the production of the necessary vouchers ; but the Board finds that the secretary is naturally unwilling to lie out of his money for six or twelve months, in addition to his somewhat onerous duties, solely for the benefit of the Government. In fact, the Board has great difficulty in getting anyone to act as secretary for this reason. I need not point out to you that a secretary is absolutely necessary for the efficient working of the Board,
I would respectfully draw your attention to the fact that the Board is much hampered in its action for the want of funds to pay for advertisements, issuing notices, &g. , and that the public complain (with some reason) of the want of publicity in connection with the doings of the Board.
For the above reasons I would respectfully submit that if the Government were to place at the disposal of the Board even double the pittance asked for, it would be well spent, and be eminently reproductive.
I have tho honour to be, Sir, Yours respectfully, D. G. Poison. The following is the reply to the letter : —
Provincial Secretary's Office,
Dunedin, March 24, 1870.
Sir, — I have been diiected to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 28th February, 1870, applying, on behalf of the Board of Wardens for the Tuapeka Depasturing District, for the sum of £10 to be placed at their disposal to cover the current expenses of the Board.
In reply I am to state that the Government will willingly reimburse the Secretary to the Board in any expenses he may incur, on presentation of vouchers at the Provincial Treasury ; but the rules of the service prohibit an advance. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servant, Alex. Willis, Under Secretary.
D. G. Poison, Esq., Waitahuna. It was then decided that all applications which did not describe the qualifications should not be received. List of applications which the Board granted —

The following applications were not granted on account of the qualifications not being stated in the applications :—: —

Clayton, — Kemp, "Win. Grant Anderson (not on goldfields.) Robert Ross' application for 19 head was delayed till enquiry was made, as a report had reached the Board that enquiry was necessary. The applications for the depasturing of sheep were next considered.
Some query was made in reference to Mr. T. Murray's application. The 731 acre qualification, which he had placed on the form, was not a qualification, as it was not within the goldfields. It appeared, however, that lie had a 50 acre paddock on the gel lfields by which he secured the right to depasture slieep there, and the application was therefore granted. Robert M'Kimmie's application to depasture 50 sheep on the Blue Spur was not granted.
The following applications were granted : — Edwin Legge - 600 Geo. Mathieson - - 1800 Sutherland and Poison - 5200 Thomas Murray - - 2500 Docherty and Galbraith - 850 Cormack and M'lntosh - 1600 Messrs. Eobertson and Michael were appointed a sub-committee to deal with all applications where the qualifications had not been stated. The Board then adjourned.
