LAWRENCE GRAMMAR SCHOOL.
A special meeting of the committee of the Lawrence School was held in the Athenaeum, on Tuesday evening, to receive applications for the situations of second master and female teacher. The President occupied the chair, and all the members of committee were present, excepting Mr. Jas. Campbell. The applications for the situation of female teacher were first considered. The following were the applicants : — Margaret Trotter, Palmerston, with testimonial from Mr. Hislop ; Christina Clark, Clark's Flat, testimonial from Rev. Dr Copland ; Laurina Constance Gillon, Dunedin, testimonial from Mr. Halliwell, Middle District School ; Rhoda Scott, Queenstown, testimonial from Mr. Taylor, SubInspector of Schools ; Mrs. Dale, Lawrence ; Hannah Brownell, testimonial from Rev. R. L. Stanford, and J. L. S. Keen ; Mrs. Macklin. Mr. Stenhouse, at the request of the Chairman, informed the committee of the duties of the female teacher, which were to instruct the junior classes to the sth book, also to teach sewing and fancy work.
The Committee then selected from the seven applications the following three, viz. : — Mrs. Trotter, Mrs. Dale, and Miss Scott.
On the motion of Mr. Pressley, seconded by Mr. M'Nicoll, Mrs. Dale was appointed on trial for three months. Carried mm. con.
The application for the assistant master were then considered. The following ia a list of the applicants: — Jas. Weir, Tuapeka Mouth ; H. P. Macklin, testimonial from Geo. Goodman, M.A., and J. M. Park, H.M. Head School ; M. W. Stack, Blacks Side School, testimonial from Milton School, Dunedin, J. Colvill, Governor of the gaol, S. Smith, Blacks, J. Church, Tokomairiro, R. Street, Dunedin, and numerous others ; John Menzies, junr^letter from his father, the Rev. Mr. Menzies ; E. L, Badeley, Pleasant Valley, testimonial from Rev. R. L. Stanford, G. R. Howard, W. Jones, Jno. L. Gillies, and Julius S. Jefferies ; D. M. P. Scott, Queenstown, testimonial from Rev. Donald Ross, G. C. Clarke, Esq., J. S. Worfchington, D. M. Mackay, J. R. Beetham, K.M., Jno. Douglas, and the Rev. Mr. Cofiey.
iMr. Jamison Avould liked to have had a better selection.
Mr. Stenhouse, Head Master, said that all the schools had been supplied with assistant teachers before the committee advertised, which might account for the selection not being better. Tt was suggested again to advertise, when Mr. Stenhouse said perhaps the best way would be to elect one of the applicants for three months on trial.
Mr. M'Kinlay thought the committee could not do better than have a trial of Jno. Menzies, jun. Mr. Dart on than proposed— That Mr. Menzieß be appointed on trial for three months, the Head Master to furnish the committee, at the expiration of that time, with a repoii;.
Seconded by Mr. I\l 'Kinlay. Carried,
Tt was also agreed that the Head Master should report in a similar manner with regard to the female teacher, and that a few ladies be appointed +o examine the sewing, &c, at the end of the three months, and report thereon.
The Chairman stated that he had examined the progress of the school alterations every day for the last week, and thought everything was going on right. He thought it would be advisable to extend the holidays for another week, as the paint would not be dry before that time.
Mr. Harrop also expressed his satisfaction with the work.
The building committee were empowered, to call for the opinion of a practical man with regard to the timber, &c, used, if they thought it necessary.
It was agreed not to open the school till Monday, the 31st instant.
