LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wed/iosday, the 19th inst. Present — Councillors Mear3, Harrop, Coverlid, and Walker. In the absence of the Mayor, Cr. Mears was called to the chair.
The newly-elected Councillors, Thomas Barnett and J. F. Herbert, signed the necessary declaration on taking office. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. An account from Messrs. Humphrey aad Co. for wheelbarrows, was read. None of the Councillors present being aware of the corporation owning any wheelbnrrows, the account was referred to the Pnblic Works Committee, to be reported upon at next meeting. The following accounts were then referred to'the Public Works and Finance Committees :— Thos. Peters, £1 2s. 6«1. ; W. T. Johnson, 18*3. ; John Downie, £47.
Finance Report No. 5 was received and adopted;
The Town Clerk said he would not be in a position to lay the annual financial report before the Council till their next meeting.
A conversation took place relative to the municipal sections lately sold.
The chairman apprehended that the same course would be adopted with the sale of these sections as was adopted in the Government sales, namely, that purchasers who had not complied with the conditions of the sale would forfeit the respective sections which they bought. Cr. Coverlid moved, " That a letter be forwarded to the Council's solicitor, to ascertain his opinion as to the power possed by the Council of impounding cattle straying in the streets of the township." The solicitor should be fully instructed as to the object the Council had in view — that it was more a paddock than a pound that was required, in which horses and cattle might be placed till _£heir owners were known. Cr. Walker seconded. Carried.
The chairman drew the attention of Councillors to a matter of considerable importance, namely, the "blocking up of the storm channel by miners erecting dams across it, and preventing the tailings from having a free passage. He referred especially to one of these dams near the Junction Hotel. If these miners were not objected to by the Council^ considerable damage would soon be done to property in Rosa Place.
Cr. Coverlid moved, " That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to- the parties complained of."
Cr. Barnett seconded.
In reply to a question asked by Cr. Walker, the Town Clerk stated that Mr. Mouat had been instructed with reference| to the tine inflicted upon exCouncillor Keen, and he believed that gentleman had already taken action in the matter. There being no other business, the Council adjourned for fourteen days.
