LAWRENCE SCHOOL EXAMINATION.
The examination of the above School took place on Tuesday and "Wednesday last. It was conducted by the teachar, Mr. Stenhouse, and the Rev. Mr. Menzies (Congregational minister). On both days there were several of the parents present, also members of the School Committee^ The scholars acquitted themselves in a highly satisfactory manner, the examination being considered the most creditable the children have yet undergone. Their proficiency in English, English History, Bible History, Geography, and Mental Arithmetic was very marked indeed, and proved ilie wisdom of the Education Board in raising the Lawrence School into a Grammar School, where, by the help of an assistant master, the more advanced scholars will have that care and attention bestowed upon them which they require. The specimens of the girls' writing exhibited on the walls of the schoolroom were much above the average ; but we cannot say the same of the boys, as even their best cpecimens were inferior. Two essays on "Patience and perseverance" — me b^ Miss Galbraith and one by Miss Jessie Popewere submitted to the Committee for tlieir decision. After a careful perusal of them, the one by Miss Galbraith was decided upon as the most comprehensive, exhibiting as it did a fund of information well applied. On the other hand, Miss Pope's essay showed the most correct orthography, and was decidedly the most practical. In vocal music we observed a decided improvement. The teacher ininformed us that the introduction of some of the Christy Minstrels' songs had given an impetus to the musical taste of the scholars, and the singing by them in our presence of " Old Black Joe " and " Annie Lisle" strongly corroborated the remark of Mr. Stenhouse. The fancy work, in the form of embroidery, samplers, and a large variety of neelework, surpassed \mj previous examination ; and in this department Miss Gillon cannot be too highly complimented upon the success achieved by her pupils. The examination being brought to a successful close, Mr. Bastings introduced the Rev. Mr. Menzies, who delivered them a short address before the prizes were distributed. Mr. Menzies expressed himself highly pleased with the examination, and at once fixed the attention of the scholars by relating two or three anecdotes. He addressed them at some lensrth on the following heads :— lst, " Tidiness ; " and on this point he highly amused the children by referring to what he termed the high water mark to be seen occasionally on the halfwashed faces of some boys and girls. 2nd, "Punctuality;" 3rd, '" Promptness and diligence." He had great faith in Ihe plodding scholar, and illustrated this pint by the fable of the hare and the t6rtoi.se. 4th, " Openmindedness." He lilted the boy whose mind was pure and whp, would defend the weak. These were poists of conduct which he would like thei^ to adjudicate upon in deciding the bestfconducted boy and girl in the school. The icholars then one by one came f orwardknd voted for the boy and girl he or she^hought to be the best behaved in the saiool. Among the girls, Jessie Pope aid Maria Campbell were ties ; and among |he boys, Petsr Robertson and Duncan Campbell were also ties. The prizes weSfe then distributed by the President, dfter which three cheers were given for Mr. Stenhouse, and three for Miss Gillo^, and the school dismissed for the Ohrismas holidays.
