ALEXANDRA .
(From a Correspondent.)
At the Court House oii Monday, the 15th inst., Mr. Fache, under order from the "Warden's Court, sold the Calidonian Water-race, which has the first right to six heads of water from Butcher's Gully, together with a claim" of four acres, situated at the Halfmile Beach, a little below the once famous Frenchman's claim, which is now worked out. The reason the water-race and claim were ordered to be sold by the Warden was a suit brought by one of the partners for adissolution of the partnership, on the grounds that the partners could not agree, and that the works were not carried on efficiently; consequently, a decree for a dissolution was granted. The auctioneer had but little difficulty iv getting the first bid, which was £100. It was run up to £2,700, in £10 bids, when it was knocked down to Mr. Michael Kitfc, shareholder and manager of tne Frenchman's claim, when a dispute arose between Mr. Kitt and Mr. W. A. Ton, which ended in the property being put up again. It was eventually knocked down fo Mr, Kitt at £2,800! There is no doul t that if any one can make a claim pay, Mr. Kitt is the man ; his character as a manager of a mining' claim is well established here, and the plant of the Frenchman's Claim will be all required to work the new purchase.
In my Just. 1 gave you an account of the reefs in the district, and stated that the shareholders of the Butcher's dully Reef intended sending a sample of quartz to the Ida Valley MininoCo.'s mill to he crushed. The sample in iv bags ready to be sent off, and in my next I hope to be able to give you the result. Parties here say it will yield from four to five ounces to the ton ; should that prove correct, ihe shareholders will immediately erect machinery of their own. Iverson and party are sinking a shjift to catch the reef at a low level. It is considered by competent judges to be the best defined reefs in the district, Bendigo Gully included. There is a party formed to test a reef at Tucker Hill, about half a mile from the township. The cap of the reep can be traced for 300 yards on the surface, and the shareholders are sanguine of success ; I hope in my next to be able to give a good report of their doings.. An accident of a serious character occurred on -Friday last to one of the wages men (Eobert Simpson) working in Blackwell and party's claim, on the Manuberikia river, about three miles above Campbell and Low's home station. A portion of the workings fell into the company's tail-race, and broke Simpson's legs in three different places. He was immediately conveyed to the' Dunstan Hospital, where, under the care of Dr. Burrows, he is progressing favourably. I am informed, on good authority, that we are to have another auctioneer in this district, in the person of Mr. Chappie. It is a healthy sign to set? new blood infused into a district at any. time, and in this particular branch competition is much wanted. From; Mr. Chappie's well-known steady and persevei'ing habits, and not being wanting; in what is familiarly torrnGd the " gift of the gab," I think he will be well patronised.
T have heard nothing since my last respecting Grarrett and Co.'s lease then alluded to, but will keep you v posted in the matter.
