COAL CREEK, TEVIOT, RACES.
Encouraged by the success which attended last years races at Coal Creek, Mr. Ayling, of the Coal Creek Hotel, and several of the neighbours, a few weeks ago, started a subscription list, which became so formidable that a programme was issued offering nearly double the atnouut of stakes as compared with last years'. Thursday and Friday, 23fch and 29fch October, were appointed for the contest, but the funds were iu such a healthy state that, in addition to the advertised list, five races were run for, one on Thursday and Friday, and three on Saturday. FIRST DAY. Thursday, the 23th, was a calm pleasant morning, but about 9 o'clock the wind rose suddenly to a gale, and the dust was flying * about in clouds. Great fears of a dirty day possessed the minds of our horsey friends —a dark cloud completely enveloped the Knobbies, and looked very threatening. This cloud, however, turned out to be a cloud of dust blown from the Dunstan Flat, and before the races commenced the wind had partially subsided, and the prospect of a good day ? returaed. In addition to local horses, there were some from the Dunstan, Manuherikia, Tapanui, and Dunedin, and a crowd of visitors from all quarters. Tainblyn's Tommy and Rathjes' Kate were placed at scratch as they had previously won a trotting race. Tommy made no show whatever, but Rathjes' Kate gained rapidly, and took the second nlace, and closely followed Crossaus' Kate, which had kept the lead for a considerable distance. The race then lay between the two mares, and was won by about a length by Crossan's. Hack Race, of 10 sovs., catch weights Threequarter mile heats.
