COROMANDEL.

(From the Grahams town "Evening Star.") The district of Coromandel promises to surpass our own goldfield in the extent and richness of some of the lodes which have been opened lately. Amons>st these M'Leod's (the Tokatea) still holds the foremost place. A gentleman who returned from Coromandel this morning has furnished us with a few items regarding this and other well known claims. Since the working was commenced in M'Leod's they have been getting out surprisingly rich specimens avery day — said to be quite equal to Long Drive stone, aud in such quantities as to be almost beyond belief. They expect to have a ton of specimen stone ready for crushing in a very short time. The Eoyal Oak (belter known as Morgan's) has developed a new leader from which specimen stone has been taken, and a general good prospect obtained. Immediately below this claim, on the Kennedy's Bay side of the range, is situated the Day Dawn, in which claim a promising leader was opened on the surface, and in driving for this another lode was opened about a foot wide, which looks very well. The Peep o' Day, adjoining th.c Day Dawn, produced some very fine surface specimens, and they aru now putting in a drive through a very wet sort of pipe-clay formation, in which drive they expect to cut; the Day Dawn leader. The All Nations No. 3 struck an excellent gold bearing leader near the surface, and tliey are now putting in a drive through a very wet sort of pipeclay formation, in which drive they expsct to cub the Day Dawn leader. The All Nations No. 3 struck an excellent gold bearing leader near t'.ie surface, and they are now putting in a drive to cut it at a lower level. The Briau Boru, 10 men's ground adjoining the above is being vigorously worked night and day, in two drives, and shows evidences of being one of the best worked claims on the field. The leaders 'in the adjoining claim have been traced into this claim, and the lower level tunnel is being pub in to cut them. The Shooting Star, on the Coromandel side of the range, produced some splendid pieces of auriferous stone on Saturday, from a brown leader cut in their drive. A good prospect was also obtained from washing the mullock. The Eakaia consists of 40 men's ground on the main range to the south of M'Leod's, for which a lease has been applied. The ground embraces both sides of the range. In the prospecting drive a very good gold-bearing leader was struck and specimens obtained. The company intend to thoroughly prospect the claim. The Eoyal Exchange, on the Driving Creek, have a drive in over a hundred feet, from £he creek level. They intend drmns; fifty feei further before | putting in a T drive to catch the reefs j running through the ground. Should they turn out auriferous, the low level at which they will be cut in this tun- i nel, and the close proximity to the creek will make the Eoyal Exchange a splendid claim. The Harbour "View continues to tu.-n out very good specimens, very similar in appearance to M'Laod's although not so rich. They expect to be on M'Leod's leader in a few weeks, but the work has been retarded owing to a scarcity of blasting tools. Two Canadian presbyteries have voted that revivals are at variance with the Westminster Catechism. Mb. Tennyson is at present staying in Paris negotiating with Grustave Dore for the further illustration of his works. Two thousand five hundred ladies in. London have taken the pledge— i.e., resolved not to shop after two o'clock on Saturdays. Erp Van Winkle. — A Eloridian Eip Van Winkle made his appearance in St. Mary's the other day, from the depths of the Everglades, bringing two negroes for sale. He was asi tonished and disgusted to learn that there had been, a war, and, that his negroes were free. — Philadelphia Ledger. Hollo way's Pitts. — Mastery, over Disease. — There is a constant tendency in the human body to pass from strengiih. jfco weakness unless some means be adopted to oounteraei the " wear and tear," and other deteriorating 'influences. Holloways Pills effect this ad mil ably : they accomplish all the mos^ exacting invalid can require. As alteratives they regulate the, stomach. and rouse the liver ; as purifiers they improve the Wood's quality ; as aperients they promote peristaltic action, and as tonics they invigerate the nervous system. They have l.lessed with health thousands previously blasted by disease. In all cases the indigestion, palpafcution, perspiration, hQAdachei, heartburn and functional obstructions, suffereis have Holloway's Pills a> a resource to fall back upon, which will never I disappoint their uiost'sanguirie hopes.

In some well deserved strictures on the recent disgusting baby show at the North "Woolsvich Gardens, the " Daily News" truly observed that although the smile of innocence and the sleep of innocence are pretty as poetical figures, yet that the exhibition of three hundred innocents smiling and sleeping is an attempt to convert poetry into hard matter-of-fact prose which must fail. I was forcibly reminded of this conflict of poetry with prosi the other day, when calling at a farmer's hous'.- in my parish and being requested to look at the new >l»aby. It was fastasleep in its cradle, and as I looked at it a sweet smile irradiated its face. The germ of a sonnet to a sleeping infant was already in my mind, when, unfortunately for the sonnet, if not for poetry, I made a casual remark concerning the smile to the professional Gramp who was in attendance. When Mrs. Gamp delivered this opinion, — 'It's the wind, sir! Bless their little 'arts ! whenever they smiles in their sleep, you may always know as they're troubled with the wind '" It was impossible for me to gainsay tins, although it proved the death blow to my sonnet. In fact, who can gainsay it ? I cannot see how such a question can be tried upon its own merits, find then finally decided. Yet tins Grampian female was a nurse of great experience, aud, aa she herself argued, " If I ain't able to pernounce- an opinion on t'sem infants, I should like to know wiio is ?" Tub Portage (Like Superior) " Mining Gazette" says that paper pipes, six inches in diameter, are used in the Pewabic copper mine to convoy air from one portion of the mine to the other. The paper pipes are quite strong, and can be joined perfectly air-tight by a strip of canvass and a coating of tar. At the Wimbledon meeting, the following amusing regimental order was issued to the London Scottish :—": — " A protest having been lodged against a Volunteer for disarranging his uniform, so as to shoot with the butt of his rifle inside of his tunic, the variation is allowed ; but this exception does not extend to ihe Jcilts of the London Scottish, which must in all cases be worn in the proper position, and not over their heads. By Order. (Signed) O. Costi> t ." Three tons of solid silver in bricks, weighing from 1500 to 1501 ounces each, were recently shipped from Georgetown, Colorado, to Chicago. These bricks were packed in sealed leather sacks ; one, however, was uncovered, and was stamped as weighing 123 pounds 2 ounces, and as worth 1302 dollars.
