This is the third similar monthly return from this claim we have published. — " NZ. Herald." j The Kaimawawa G-oldfields. — The " Wanganui Chronicle" of the 3nd instant says : — "It may be interesting to state the position of the prospecting parties recently fitted out in Wanganui. The first party, fitted out originally to find a track to Kaitnanawa and to prospect the ranges at the same time, started, as we have already stated, on Friday week, seeking to make their way across the country, but they had only proceeded a short way when the idea was given up. It was fcund that tke combination of exploring; and prospecting did not fit amoothly into each other. But the party, purely for prospecting, set out again in the beginning of the week, taking the upfiver route to Eanana in canoes. In goinaj up the river, however, a mishap befell .one of the canoes — nothing less than a capsize on an eel-weir, whereby A quantity ,of provisions were lost. This naturally necessitated Tenewed delay, but on Thursday evening a canoe was despatched from Wanganui with additional provisions, and we anticipate no further hiaderance (the Queen's • enemies excepted) to this party, under the leadership of Mr. Bracken, reaching the Kaimanawa. The second party, which left Mr. Kennedy's, at Upokongaro, this day week, intending to take or find an inland track, made a toilsome march as far as the "Wangaehu, roughed it bravely, but, finding that the obstacles in the way were, so great that it wdulcl be impossible in any reasonable time to reach their destination, they also made up their minds to return to town. We understand they mean to start again this morning ; we have not heard by what route,'but we presume it will be also, up t^ie Wan^aehu. The new (Company (the Wangaehu Union) will have a ready, wd should think, in a feV^ays to set out on the 'same «rork of /exploration. Between the
united efforts of iße several parties, it will surely go hgPPif nothing beneficial comes of it." ' The " Christchurch Independent " learns that a sample of stone weighing about two pounds, obtained from the reef in the Eakaia district, purchased last Monday by several gentlemen in Christchurch, has been analyzed by the amalgamative process, and, after , being retorted, has yielded at the rate ! of three-fourths of an ounce of to the ton. A reserve has been applied : for under the '' Temporary Mining Eeserves Act, 1869," by the above \ gentlemen. We understand that this is a continuation of the reef purchased by the Eakaia Company.
