Dh ! what is love ? A moekirg cheat, Disguised in semblance rare, To woo the heart with promise sweet, To paint the future fair--Then overwhelm us with dcapair. I thought his tender eyes were true ; Ah me ! how could 1 Is now That falsehood wore. sv,cli dazzling hue ? His heart was cold aa snow — Pie plunged wy soul in hopelpss woe. The days diift by, I heed them not ; They bring no joy to me ; The bibs that crowned my woman's lot W&s Quickly doomed to flee ; A stroke of Rite checked all my glee. It may be hs will never guess Whiifc dearth his absence made ; TTould I, a woman, not suppress The silent grief that preyed Upon a loving heart befcr.iyed? ■JVould. T recall the haunting past, With all the charms it wore— - The fragrance round it's pafch-vay cast ?, Xo, no, thank God ! tis o'er, Such dreams can never vex mo more. You cannot break this stony calm ; Am I not then lesignel? There is no comfort, no sweeb balm, My bleeding wounds to blind ; In inulo my only strength I find. No tide of bliss with pulsing throb. Shall sot my heart at strife ; Jline eyes are dry, I cannot sob, And mourn my broken life ; And yet no mail shall call me wife.
