TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting was held on Wednesday evening. Present —the Mayor; Crs. Henry, Mears, Keen, Harropj and Walker.

A finance report^ recommending the payment of accounts to the amount of £46 13s. 4d., wasLreceived and adopted.

On the suggestion of the Mayor, Cr. Harrop moved, " That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to the several municipalities, requesting tlieir co-operation in endeavouring to lower the present high rate of telegraphic charges, and suggesting the advisability of memorializing the G-overnor in Council and the Superintendent on the subject." Cr. Keen seconded, and the motion was carried. A motion, resolving to obtain the opinion of Messrs. Kenyon and Maddock on the question of impounding cattle straying within the township, was also carried, Cr. Keen moved, " That this Council being of opinion that the management of the Lawrence Cemetery has from first to last been grossly neglected by the Trustees, is determined to do everything in its power to obtain a change in the management ; resolved, therefore, that a respectful memorial be forwarded to his Honour the Superintendent, embodying the whole grievance, and praying for the exercise of extraordinary powers, in order to redress the same ; that Crs. Harrop, Mears, Henry, and mover be appointed a committee to preface the memorial, to sign it on behalf of the Council, and to append to it the corporation seal ; this resolution to form part of the preamble to the said memorial." Cr. Mears seconded. The Mayor defended the Trustees. The motion was carried nem. con. On the motion of Cr. Henry, the Town Clerk was instructed to bring forward, at nest meeting, a statement of the financial position of the corporation. Crs. Keen, Harrop, and Henry were, ! on the motion of the last named, appointed a committee to amend the standing orders. The Council then adjourned.
