TUAPEKA MOUTH.

(From our own Correspondent).

A meeting was held at Mr Taylor's store on Tuesday, the 14th ult., in reference to the agricultural lease applied for by Johu JBroivn, viz., sections 23 and 24, block 1., Waitahuna West. Mr J. Weir was called to the chair. He explained to die meeting the situation of the ground, viz., that Messrs M'lntyre and Keece have a reservoir in the middle of the ground applied for, and three head races running from the same to different claims, besides a race four miles long which empties itself into it, which would be valueless if the ground was leased. It was proposed, seconded atid carried, " That Mr Campbell be instructed to object to the ground being leased, on account of being auriferous, the whole of the twenty acres applied for being considerably within 600 yards of the Tuapeka creek." Considerable litigation has taken place on the upper portion of the Tuapeka creek, both with Chinese and Europeans, on account of ground being leased that was auriferous. If such ground as Mr J. Brown has applied for be leased, we, the miners, may expect the same. It appears to me very strange that Mr Brown, after having: applied to Warden Croker in 1866, and being refused, and knowing the regulations lately passed provided that no ground shall be leased within half a mile of the creek, should have the presumption to apply for the above ground. Mr Brown has a ten-acre paddock fenced in without any lease attached to it, and I think he ought to have been content, without further wishing to encroach on the diggers' rights.
