SOCIAL INTERCOURSE.
(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.)
Sir, — In your issue of tho 2Sth ult., I see a " Mother of Daughters" lamenting the bad taste displayed by the young men of Tuapeka in going out of their own circle for wives. It must lo a blessed place to live in where thero are so many marriageable young ladies — not like this where lat present reside. If a female comes into this lo cality, no matter what her ago or arpearance may be, she has any quantity of offers from respectable, well-to-do young men. If a " Mother of Daughters" would send somo of her yoimrr female friends on a visit to their upcountry cousins, I have no doubt before a month they would all be comfortably settled in life. I and my mates are on tho look out for partners to share our huts and make thorn comfortable homes. "We are all respectable, goodlooking, young, middle-aged men, varying from twenty -four to forty years of age. If I said much more you would thiuk I was blowing a bit, so I will leave the rest to the young ladies themselves, if they will favour our benighted land with a visit, and cheer our bachelor hearts with a glance from their laughter-loving eyes. I perfectly endorse the remarks made by a " Mother of Daughters" about young men hanging about bai-s and billiard-rooms ; but where else can they go for a little change and excitement ? If there i.s no comfortable fireside and female sol ciety where a young man may spend some of his evenings, he has only the bar to go to, where he purchases a smile from the barmaid by spending his money ; the freer he spends tho sweeter she smiles. I hope fathers and mothers will think over the subject, and afford facilities for young men (of course those they believe to be respectable) spending some of their evenings within the family circle, which would be a source of pleasure to themselves and their families, as well as to the young men in the district. I "With many thanks to a " Mother of Daughters" for her remarks, and hoping it will have some effect, and I for one will not remain as I now subscribe myself, —
A Bachelor. Manuherikia, September 6th.
