SAD AND ALONE.
gltttng idly, dreaming sadly, Dreaming by my window pane, Listening to the never-ceasing, Never-ceasing, pattering rain ; Vainly— oh, how vainly !— wishing For the bright past back again ; Wishing for those dayß of gladness, Days which brought but joy to me, Ere my heart scarce knew a sadness, When, with spirit gay and free, On life's path I gaily wandor'd Now how Bad and dear to me ! Softly-falling, murmur'd inusio, Still I listen, gentle rain ; Canst thou tell me in thy beating, If life's joy shall come again? Dost thou whisper, "Time is flying, Bearing on it's wing my pain ?" Wilt thou tell me, "Every sorrow Has its mission from above ?" Though so dark my night, the morrow Yet shall prove a Father's love ' Doat thou whisper in my sadness — " Learn to bear the chastening rod ?" $jieGling lowly, visions holy, Still I listen, gentle rain ; Voices calling, tears are falling, Yet I hear that heavenly strain, Bweetly bringing angels singing, Lighting Hope's bright lamp again I
