TOWN COVNCIL.
The usual meeting of Town Council was held on Wednesday evening, when the Mayor, Crs. Hay, . Mears, Keen, Walker, and Henderson attended. The minutes of last meeting were read and comfirmed. - An accouut from. Mr. Nicol, for the amount due on his contract for constructing Lancaster-street (£25), was referred to the Finance Committee. Two applications for the assessorship were received, one from Mr. Campbell, the other from Mr. Hay. Cr. Walker complained of the manner in which the work had been done during the past year. Cr. Mears moved that the matter should stand over for a fortnight, and that fresh applications be advertised for ;
the calling for tenders in a case of this kind was apt to mislead. He thought that often the lowest tender v was -the one should not be accepted. There had been a great number of complaints owing to the way the duty was performed laaf^ year. > Cr. Keen seconded. He thought it would be well if a fixed sum were stated a^ remuneration. Cr. Mears amended his motion by adding a clause providing that the salary should be £15. TK^notion was put and carried. Cr. Keen called a ttention to the astonishing fact that, although no one would second his motion to that effeot last Council night, gravel had been laid between the footpath and the Post-office. Cr. Mears said the work had been done by the Public Works Committee. He could not second Cr. Keen's motion, as it was for a specific qiiantity of gravel. Or. Keen moved that tenders should be called for the gravelling of the footpath in Ross-place. Cr. Mears seconded, although it would be almost useless to do it, unless the Inspector of Nuisances prevented the kerbing being cut up by drays. The Mayor thought it would be better to wait until the Government works in Ross-place were completed. Cr. Hay thought that any bad places should be filled up at once ; but that no extra expense should be incurred until it was seen what the Government would do. They would not start work for eight or ten weeks. Cr. Walker, moved that the portion of Kilmarnock - street between Stranraerstreet and the Beaumout-road should be gravelled. The gravel on each side of the street was being rapidly carted away, aa many as seventy loads having been carted away during the last fortnight. Cr. Mears seconded. He thought the Council should interfere to prevent the gravel being removed.
The motion was carried, it being arranged that parties should in future be prevented from carting away any more gravel. Cr. Keen gave notice that he would move, at next meeting, " That a suitable yard be hired, to enable the Inspector of Nuisances to detain horses and cattle straying within the township until they were identified." Cr. Hay asked what steps had been. taken in reference to the Fire Brigade. The Mayor said that a public meeting had been held, and several gentlemen appointed to draw up a report. He believed a number of persons would join, the only difficulty being to obtain a suitable Captain ; perhaps Cr. Hay's return would remove this obstacle. Cr. Mears was glad to learn that Cr. Keen had volunteered his services aa ladder-man. It was agreed that the rate for the ensuing year should be fixed at next meeting ; and there being no other business, the Council adjourned.
