ORIGINAL POETRY.
LINES. New Zealand's getting very low : Her pulse is sinking fast, Whose youth was like the rosy morn, But not? 'tis overcast. In blood and ashes now she sits, Her garments soiled and torn ; Her youthful brow is wrinkled now, And all her gladness gone. Her coffers once were running o'er, And crowds came to her shores, "While brawny Labour stretched his arm Unfolding all her stores ; And gentle Peace stood by her Bide, Her valleys yielding gold, While yellow grain and fertile fields To gentle breezes rolled. How comes it, then, that she is sick And sinking day by day ? Or that her people in disgust Are hurrying away ? We are misgovern'd : that's the cause, It stares us in the face ; And nothing but a sweeping change Can save us from disgrace. Cbaigiblee. June 18, 1869.
