THE BRAZEN" KNIGHTS:
A LEffEND OF SAINT JOSEPH.
The Brazen Knights, who long are famed For glorious discord, had proclaimed A feast to B,acchus, and they named.
An early day,
When they the jolly god they claimed Would homage pay.
The time arrived, and in the hall |Or, rather, Gaf c) mustered all The Knights, responsive to the call
Of that brave Knight, Whose fame for pies and cakes withal Is nothing slight.
•The jest went round, the laugh was loud, And nectar Bacchus might be proud •To drink was there ; and every cloud
Qf trouble flew ; And a» no heeltaps were allowed, They soon got fou.
At last the chairs commenced to reel ; The well-primed Knights began to feel UnwelL Our host was seen to- steal Beneath his chair, Declaring - ? £was his hearty meal That brought him there.
And as beneath his chair he lay, /Our luckless host was heard to say, " I don't believe this spree will pay ; But never mind, To try and get them all away Some ruse I'll find."
So up he scrambled to his feet, ■And, in a voice more thick than sweet, Proposed adjournment to the street,
jsiweet ait's to play, And give the drowsy town a treat Till dawn of day.
Up rose the Knights, with brazen lung, And as they go the tables clung, -To keep them steady while they sung
" Hip, hip, hoo-ray !" /The very walls with echoes rung,
£3 they msy. •Then each Knight seized his instrument, And forth into the night they went, All bawling to their hearts' content
" We'll hang John Brown 0n an apple tree," till, spent, They soon calmed down ;
.Then blew away with might and majn. Some trying " O come back again ; " And others, " Love not," but in vain ;
Q what a clatter, l^Tule nightcaps at the window-pane Cried "What's the matter !." At length a silence reigned around ; -They gently slumbered on the ground ; And in the morning thus were' found ; N _ ,- _ But all was o'er : ?Fhey gftve bt^one long, holloa sound — A horrid snore !
