Thursday, 20th May.

George Mounteney, freeholder, Tapanui, examined. He considered that of the land proposed to be thrown into Hundreds there were between 30,000 and 40,000 acres " of purely agricultural land. He believed that 10,000 acres would be purchased within the next three years ; this, he believed would only take place if the privilege of a hundred were attached to it. He did not believe that the promoters of the petition or those who signed it were actuated by animosity to the runholders. W. B. Taldwin, manager for Mr. G G. Maitland, runholder, was then examined. The 8000 acres block lately sold from the run was all the agricultural land upon it. He considered the flats on Messrs. M'Kellar's and Robcrts's runs as superior to the 8000 acres block sold on the run managed by him.
