AN EXPLANATION.

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.)

Sir, — I am sorry to trouble you with this, but as I do not want the impression to go abroad that I was actuated by malice in the late case between J. Pearson and myself, I ara compelled to ask your assistance in the matter. Mr. Pearson stated on oath that in consequence of his recovering damages from Mr. Hunter, a short time ago, I told him I would be one in for him, thereby implying that 1 was a friend to Hunter, and the reverse to Mm. I deny in toto that I ever spoke to him or any of his family on that subject or any other from the time of the settlement, of that case until the morning of the 18th inst., when I civilly asked him to settle with me for the damage j that morning sustained by his animal. He refused point blank, telling me I must summons him, which left me no other alternative. As •to Hunter, I have no cause to do otherwise than respect him as a neighbour, he having always given me civil satisfaction whenever I complained to him, which I have not always received from Mr. Pearson ; but this 1 intend to exact in future, together with something more substantial. — 1 am &c. , James R. Gascoigne, Lawrence, May 28, 1869.
