ORIGINAL POETRY.

I CANNOT SING THE OLD SONGS.

I cannot sing the old songs, The songs he loved to hear ; The words, lisif uttered, trembling, die Upon my lipsj and with a sigh 1 check the rising tear.

When last I sang the old songs His life was on the wane. His head was pillowed on my breast ; O how I prayed to bring him rest, And sooth his dying pain.

♦' Sing, love," he said, "the old songs, Those Bangs of days now past ; " And then he murmured, with a sigh, *' Grant this request before I die, I feel 'twill bo the last."

{ sang to him the old songs, In cadence soft and low ; And as I sang m.y darling's breath Grew shorter, while' the dews of death. Fast gathered on his brow.

I ceased to sing the old songs, And heard him softly say, " My" own on earth, in heaven the same 5" And. as he gently breathed my name His spirit passed away. V^crstonesvMay !<), 1869, J,
