Police v. Griffen. — Defendant was charged by police with carrying on business as a retail butcher in Lawrence, without having a business license. Mr. Richards appeared for defendant, and contended' that' the premises . complained of were not within the goldfields ; — firstly, it was within the incorporated town of Lawrence; and secondly, he (the defendant) paid rates for the said premises to the Corporation. The " Gazette " having been produced, proved that from a certain point called Eyre Point, somewhere not known, and ending somewhere equally obscurse. However, it proved that Lawrence and all other towns within the area of the grant were within the G-oldfields. It also appeared, from the evidence given, that the ground occupied by defendant was never judicially extracted from the Goldfields. The Warden took time to consider hia verdict. ' '
