TOROMAIRIRO RACES.
This meeting is to come off on the 24th and 25th inst., and, thanks to the kindness of a gentleman resident in Tokomairiro, we are enabled to give a list of some of the probable starters with the comments of our sporting reporter. The course, which is situated some three or four miles out of the township, is level and in fine order, the rain which has fallen during the latter part of this week putting it iv excellent trim. The " event" of the first day is the District Handicap, for which the following are the entries :—: —
Judging by public performances, the two top weights ought to hold all the
others safe, for Lady Eli^^^^^^^H and neck race with Banj^^^^^^^^H Purse here, when she j^^^^^^^^H Nor do we believe that^^^^^^^^^H form enough to win the j^^^^^^^^^l Clown is so uncertain thi^^^^^^^^H whether he will carry any j^^^^^^^^^| The two lowest weights are^^^^^^^^H most severely weighted horsei^^^^^^H and, if previous experience is woQ^^^^H thing, have not the shadow of aa^^^| We believe, then, that the two mares^^H lead the van, and we , are inclined to tauH LADY ELLEN for choice, but Miss King will not be far behind, and if the pot is to be upset we shall look for Mr. Bradley's colours well forward. Of the Maiden Plate nothing can be said, the only other race of which anything can be said being the Tokomairiro Handicap of £100, when Lady Ellen, Skyonian, Abdallah, Miss King, and Mauve are likely to be the pick of the field. Among other probable starters we may enumerate Gipsey Queen, Orphan, Penelope, and Welcome. The distance is rather too short for Skyonian, but if not first he will be in the very first rank, and Captain Hutchinsoh's choice should not be far away. Orphan ran a good horse in the Maiden Plate here, but we doubt his powers in the company likely to face the starter on Thursday, and the only other horses to be feared by the oldHielandman are Abdallah and Lady Ellen. We shall, however, plump for Skyonian, and look to Captain Hutchinson's choice for the winner of second honours. The Handicap Hurdle Race should be an easy triumph for Black Prince unless Clown takes it in his head to go, and the Trotting Race is Lombard-street to aChina orange on Flora Temple. Altogether there is an excellent bill of fare, and we trust the fine weather may con*tinue long enough to" make the meeting & success.
