GENERAL NEWS SUMMARY.
The deputy-lieutenant "of Sligo has been" shot. Dr. Tait, Bishop of London has been appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. He ib the first Scotchman that ever held the office. The Galalea, Captain H.B.H. the Duke of Edinburgh, sailed from England on the 9th November. The Liberal majority in the ImperialParliament is stated at 110. Tbere has been a mail robbery at G-untawang, and the "Western mail has also been robbed. Thousands of sheep are dying intho Darling and Paroo districts through drought. Queen Isabella has left behind her 170 carriages, several splendid Arab and English horpes, as well as the finest collection of mules extant, in the coach houses and stables of the Boyal palace a.t Madrid. The* puke of Montpcnsier, it appears, made himself unpopular at Seville by his extreme niggardliness. He spent his time, writes "La Liberte," in purchasing eatates at a low rate, and soiling oranges at a high price, and remained perfectly foreign to the politics of the country. The " Journal de Paris " says that the candidature of Prince Alfred has lately made rapid strides in Spain, and that the idea of a British Prince is favourably entertained by all the cultivated classes. The Duke and Duchess of Montpensier have sent to Madrid, Cordova, and tSantander large sums of money for the use of the persons wounded during the insurrection. The accoicehement of her Boyal Highness the Princess Christian may be' expected at no very distant date. A companion ballad to " (3-ocL Bless the Prince of "Wales " is announced, entitled " G-od 'Bless the Princess too." At a prominent New York hotel three men - have lately died in one room. It was supposed that the gas was the cause of it, and ~a dog was placed in the same room. In eight hours the animal was dead. Lately, the men belonging to the 42nd Regiment wore, for the first time, after niany years 1 petitioning, the blue G-lengary bonnet, as a foraging cap, which gave the soldiers a very smart appearance. ' The Glengary, with an eagle's feather, forms full dress with civilian Highland costume. The new metal ornaments for the cockade have, not yet been sewed out. We understand that all the iufantry of the line will shortly adopt the G-lengary, which possesses three good qualities — lightness, comfort, and durability. The price of the bonnet is from 2s. to 2s. 3d.
