WALKING MATCH.
Ross Place showed en unusually animated appearance early on Monday morning. Several of those interested in pedestrian feats had assembled in the neighbourhood of the Masonic Hotel to witness the start of the walking match between Mr. Hall and Mr. Twigge, for £5 a side, from the Masonic to the Provincial, Evans Flat, a distance of three miles. A few minutes past seven o'clock, the competitors being ready, Mr. Weatherly,who was judge on the occasion, gave t^e word to start, when the two went off at a good sharp walk, which they kept up side by side till they reached the bridge arrows the Tuapeka Creek, when Mr. Hall lapped a few yards. M-. Twigse, af'er v comin/r to the bridge, had the load by a few steps : hut Mr. Hall easily gained his former pesitior. Munro's Hill was soon reached, when the- real trial of strength began. Mr. Hall took the lekfi aud gradually gained ground to the t^p of the hill, where he was from forCjS^ fifrv yards in advance c£. Handicap Boys' Race. — Lyons and Hart, Ist prize, 10a ; 2nd do., ss. Equal. Vaulting with Pole. — Ist, Drysdale, L 2; 2ud,*R. Craig, LI. Sack Hurdle Race.— Ist, R. Craig, LI ; 2nd, T. Neill, 10s. Kunning Hop Step and Jump, — Ist, Drysdale, L 2 ; 2nd, Henderson, LI. Second Day, Tuesday, Dec. 29. In spite of the principal events having been decided the first day, the attendance was good, and all the competitions were watched with intense interest. The fiirst event was .Fluf Race, 150 yils.— lst. J. Davidson, £2 : 2nd. J. liarkimm, £1. The next was that amusing performance, Punch's Pony, which was attempted unsuccessfully by a good many, the winner being Mr. .Russell. The next event was the Cornish wrestling which was well contested, the prize eventually going between Tyson and Wcdlake; Tyson was the heavier man of the two, but Wedlakc was evidently the more scientific wrestler. Next followed Tilting at the Eing, with the following result : —
