RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before W. L. Simpson, Esq., R.M.) Saturday, Nov. 21. Inspector or Nuisances t. Clark, for having allowed his horse to stray within the municipality of Lawrence. This case came on for hearing some days back, but was adjourned until to-day to enable the 'inspector to amend the information. Evidence having been heart, defendant was finediin the mitigatM sum of Is. and Todd was Tuapeka Drs. him this Sdiotho Act made aiid^tpvided. < pleaded" gujlty, but in tjj.ab lie was ignoivant at HM^ce of the requirements of tho |Ep? that he had driven cattlo for tho Ij^^wen years through almost every rfn: 'in the country, and was never cHa^len^ed until now. Ho moreover stated that on looking over tho Act ho found*thau milking cowfl were exempted ; Chat in tlie mob referred to there ■g^re twenty- three- miloh cows. -He hoped tliat^the Magistrate would be as lenient as possMo. H^vo a discussion took placo as to *nniafc wr/i a milking cow within the meaning ol' tlio Act. The point being settled, tho iVLigutrate stated that- ho had no alternative .in matter ; but if Mr. 'Huhotcl would' consent to give credit for tho amount of milking cows in tho- mob, he would then givecftoct to il^i l^ Mr. Schotel refuseu to^ maktu laivjF "cbnceßsious." The Magistrate, after aumming up the evidence, gavo Lcinc^stor cred.it. for fifteen milch cows, and ho would fino
him for the remainder in the sum of sb. per head, costs of Court, and expenses of two witnesses, 10s. each, and Is. mileage, one of whom had come 28 mjles and the other 17 miles. Mears t. two CnrrTASiEir. — No appearance. — Dismissed. M'JKnight t. Eagle, for balance of wagen. No appearance of defendant. Verdict for amount claimed, with costs j and expenses.
