Anvil : Anvil, Bir. " Jamio j Anvil, as I said, sir. Now, command me, gentlemen, I am quite at your service. But first, my dear Soles, how is my good friend Mrs. Soles, and your promising family ? Soles : I am a bachelor, sir. Jamie : Of course, so you are ; aB my friend Snivel says, soles solus. But I hope this wet weather will show you tho inconvenience of single Soles. Anvil: But the track, 'sir? We must Jamie : The trac?k ? to be sure, the track. Let mo, first draw your attention to the state of the country. Compare it, I ask you, gentlemen, compare it, I say, with what it was when I entered office, and understand the glow of patriotic satisfaction which pervades my bosom. Soles (slightly mollified) : lam snre we are very much obliged to you. , , Jamie : Ah, my 'dear friends, I trust you will not be led astray by the wicked agitators who are endeavouring to ruin the country by driving mo from office; it is to men of your intellectual calibre and social standing I look for support. Anvil, But, sir, we did not como here to Jamie : You are right, dear Anvil-, as usual ; this is. no place for . us to exchange confidences. Come with me, then, to the sylvan bowers of Oamaru, and then be convinced of my enlightenod patriotism. Soles and Anvil: We are much obliged for the honour, and accept with pleasure. (Exeunt Soles and Anvil.) Enter Judas Snivel from the cupboard, where he had been concealed during the interview. Judas: Well done, Jamie; you caught those gudgeons nicely. Jamie : Yes, Judas, you must admit I am somewhat clever at that littlo game, and, like your illustrious namesake, can betray with a kiss. Judas : Go on and prosper. I believe our salaries are safe after all.
