LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.) Sib, — I consider there is no subject so replete with interest to the enquiring mind as "Man," .individually, collectively, socially, morally, and religiously considered. Ifc matters not whether it is the Siamese Twins, bound together by an indissoluble tie, -or the Town Couucil of our incorporated borough. In each r fuaA in every case, there is muck to admire; and, not to use a h#rsh term, sometimes we see in

man, or in a body of ,men ? nrach to blame, either in sins of omission or t c9xnmiss|on. , J have.no need to go to'/the*'^ndi|J>f thfe..eartitjt, either to praise or censure. The Town Council of Lawrence at tail times furnishes materials for thought nevertheless, for all their 'Bhort-commgs| ajnd I siipppae they *do not consider ithemselves. im 1-'1 -' maculate, there is more to praise than to blame in regard to their'matter-of-fact mode of doing business ; and without subjecting them to the undignified process of taking off their hats to Old Peter, the beauty and sublimity (I cannot find a better word just now) of the corporate estate ia the theme of admiration of all visitors to Lawrence. Every one seems to be agreed on this : that a great deal 'has been done in a short space of time. The streets are wide and well formed, for an inland .town, and the- buildings are certainly not third-clasa. Now, having said this much, which is not a word less than I should say, I beg to gratulate the Town Council, and the public on the Gabriels side of the creek, on the completion of the substantial bridge over the stormlchannel, which is a credit to the Council. But it is just one of those things which create another Oar Council cannot fail to see, if they will open their eyes, that the "tide" is rapidly making upon the land, and it is only a question of a few months wlien the wliole flat will be impassable for foot passengers. It is only a matter requiring a small amount of computation to be enabled to come to the solution of the danger which is imminent, and wliich. is threatening destruction to, the most valuable part of the town, assuming that the tailingß from the Blue Spur and "W^etherstoneswill raise the bed of the creek at least ten feet liiglier. Now, sir, it ia not too late to avert the threatened danger ; and if our Council are right men in the right place, they will at once, without delay, apply to the Government for sufficient funds to enable" them to make a deep channel to carry the tailings down below the junction of the Tuapeka, and there make a large reservoir to- receive the light gold .which will be washed down. In course of time this gold would pay for the outlay. It is sheer nonsense to talk about getting compensation from the miners ; and the Council must make up their mind that, sooner than pay compensation, they will stop mining to a man. "Where will .then be all their boasted greatness ? Better let the Town Hall arrangement stand in abeyance for a while, until they see how the "tide" floats. Our 'little town of Wetherstones 'is similarly circumstanced -with- Lawrence. We soon , shall not have a- road to any place except Waipori or to the moon ; and all the ne,at little cottages and gardens on the flat are in jeopardy. The main street of Wetherstones will soon be a main canal. I hope, sir, to see action taken in this very important matter. lam not an alarmist, but I go through the world with my eyes open.— 3 am, &c;, " :• Old Peter Piped. Wetherstones Braes, ,No,v. 10.
