LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

On Wednesday, the 16th inst., a meeting of the Town Council was held, the Acting Mayor, Mr. Keen, in the chaxr.All'the Councillors attended. ' After the , minutes of last meeting had been xead k itnd approved, The Chairman read a letter from the Rev Mr. Martin, in which he complained of empty drays which, after nightfall impeded the roadway opposite the Parsonage. It stated that on wet nights the horses converted the very verandah of the house into a stable. The letter was received by the Council. Cr. Mears inquired whose duty it was, under the bye laws, to look after these matters. ' ' The Chairman said that the Inspector of Nuisances was bound to give notice tq offenders, and if that were neglected, to bring the matter before the Resident Magistrate. _ Cr. Mears moved, ."That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to the Inspector of Nuisances, calling his attention to the matter." ' Cr. Bay seconded the motion, which was put and carried. The Chairman read a letter from Mr. Murdoch, enclosing his *ccount, which amounted fa £U 15s. 10d.— Ordered to be paid. „' __ , The fourth report of the Public Works Committee was then read, in which they recommended that Mr. Tuckey be informed that £1 is laid aside for filling up wa'er-holes. They resolved to call for tenders for filling up holes behind Mr. Mears' house before the 9th October. The fifth report, which was also received, stated that a tender had been received fro'in Donnit and Bilson to do the above work for £6, which they recommended the Council to accept. After some conversation, this recommendation was complied with. Or. Hay moved the suspension of the Standing Orders, to pave the. way for the -reception of a motion, " That tenders be called for half a chain of curbing, to be constructed in Ross Place, near the "Tuapeka Press" office. He stated that, in the event of a flood, all the earth there would be swept away, thereby entailing expense to the Council. Cr. Mears seconded, and the motion being carried, the Orders were suspended. Cr. Hay then moved his motion, seconded by Cr. Meyer. Cr. Walker complained that he had received no proper notice of the meetings of the Public Works Committee ; he was therefore in the dark in reference to these matters. As for the present matter, it was not much, nor did he think much .of it ; still he thought that were it deferred, the earth might have more time" to settle ; and as for floods, they were not much to be dreaded just now. Mears said, in reference to the Reservoir, the pipes had all been completed, yat when he went up yesterday morning he found the dam simply a sludge bole. The Clerk stated he had written to Mr.' (Goldsmith directing him to turn on the water as soon as possible. Cr. -Hay suggested that the members of the Public Works Committee visit the dam in a few days and see for themselves what was wanted. Some ' conversation followed on the state of affairs between the Corporation and the Phoenix Water Company, which resulted in the Town Clerk being inI etructed, on the motion of Cr. Mears, I seconded by Cr. Henderson, to write to I a solicitor, and have an agreement drawn I up for the signature of both paarties. I ' Cr. Mears made a suggestion, that the I amount paid should le £1 per week, in I [order to enable them, in the event of a I Week ? s want of water, to have a remedy, I which seemed t<3 meet the approval of I the Council.
