ORIGINAL COREESPONDENCE
THE PROPOSED TOWN HALL. (To the Editor of tha Tuapeka Times.) Snt,— Aa the question of th« propriety of erecting a towii ball » likely to be again brought before the citiaens oi Lawrence, you will perhaps excuse my occu>ying a portion of your valuable spact ,vith a few remarks on the subject. It it surely neither very dignified nor becoming in the members of our Town Council to hold their meetings in an hotel, when the importance and prosperity of the township seem to justify the erection of a building • suitable for their wants. The outlay, il heaty at first, would, were the affair properly managed, soon be reimbursed. The expense of providing an office for the Town Clerk would be an immediate and •important saving, and the revenue to be derived from the occupation of the hall by various public societies, could not fail to be considerable. The discomfort at preseut experienced by our councillors is no slight cause of complaint, aud the saving effected in rent alone would go a long way to pay the interest of the sum required for the building. It would be well if a public meeting were called in_ order to give the citizens an opportunity of expressing their sentiments on the matter, and of hearing the arguments for and against the measure. Wi th apologies for occupying so much of your space, 1 am, &c, A Citizen-. Lawrence, 18fch September, 1868.
