THE TEVIOT MEMORIAL AND MR. WARDER HICKSON.

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.)

Sib, — Concerning a letter signed "George Mack<*y," appearing in your paper of the 18th, I would wish -to say a few words.- lam a resident- now for a considerable time in this district, and am slightly acquainted with a few matters rsfarred to in Mr. -Mackay's letter. Mr. Mackay states that, to his own personal knowledge, " two parties are prepared to bring in to -the bank of the river at the soxrth end of the township." Bring in what? I suppose he means a water-race ; if so, why do they not do so ? " Mr. Mackay knows well that the locality referred to by lu'm as being, at the south end of the township is considerably beyond where any buildings are erected, and also that the recent survey does not extend' to' within some distance of the place. Mr. Mackay states that 1 all the fourteen parties, who signed his memorial haye an interest in the t6wnship7 Admitting they have some kind of interest, does he wish to imply that the thirty-seven signing the counter-memo-rial have not also an interest of some kind or other iv the township ? I certainly say they hold as* much or more interest than those -parties whose names were marked with a X. < jTf Mr. Boyd occupies H carpenter's shop, it; is only within the past week or two thai he has done'so.' Mr. Mackay has a conyenient way of arguing .when he says Mr. Williams iiad a shoemaker's shop. To have' been more correct he should have said the man had, at the time of his signing the-Jnemorial, only arrived a few days previously, being, a perfect stranger to the place, and knowing nothing as to the 1 corruptness of the "statements contained inHhe memorial', but over-willing .and ready to accommodate his neighbor by attaching hi6inatn,e l -tf>.se document' ; the shoemaker's shop he occupied being the jgrivilege accorded to him )hy Mr. Donall bf a ieat?'in aicpnier ofjiis.'bu teller's ;shop. • Does Mr. Maokay know whether either of those parties happen, -to bold either miners' rights or bnsine'ss licenses 7 How about T. Rosa, Jas. Cameron, aji<l Charles Thompson 1 What interest do thoy hold? -Mr. Mackay's explanation^ about Mrs. Brophy signing" her husband's name *to the, memorial is- rather original, considering that Mr. Brophey happens to reside at the Teviot himsell -X&ui,;&e.,.
