WAGES AT WETHERSTONES.
(To tlie Editor of the Tuapeka Times).
Sir, — I notice in your issue of Saturday last that you have heard of several persons making enquiries for men, and cannot obtain them, even at 12s. 6d. per day. Either you or your juformants are telling great untruths ; and for the benefit of men who might bs induced by such glowing accounts to come here, I would like to contradict your statement. In the first place, there is not a claim on Wetherstones that employs any wages men, with the exception of odd days ; and, in the second place, to my knowledge, for the last three years, 11s. per day has been the wages for men when wanted, and any number of men that you or your informant wants can be got at it. — I am, &c, A Lover of Truth. [We trust that we are lovers of truth as much as our correspondent ; and if we have been misinformed as regards the correct rate of miners' wages, we have not so as regards the wages paid for agricul- | tural labor. We know for a fact that one man in the neighborhood of Wetherstones was requiring hands for harvesting, and could not obtain them at Bs. a-day with rations, which our correspondent will admit was not much short of 12s. 6d. a-day^ This, however, may be considered a quite exceptional season of the year ; but still, it does nob detract from the truthfulness of our statement that labor was abundant.— Ed. T.T.]
