POSTAL ARRANGEMENTS.
Mails from Europe and the Australian colonies are at present forwarded from Melbourne on or about the tenth of each month. Should the English mail not have arrived by that date, another stoiimcr awaits the arrival of the English mail in Hobson's Bay for a period of ninety-six hours, and even beyond that time for any other time not exceeding a like period of ninety-six hours, if authorised by the Postmaster-General or his agent, while the mail steamer which arrives in Melbourne on the 10th, conveys the homeward mails from Port Chalmers on or about the 20th of each month.
flails are made up to Dunedin for transmission to Australia, Southland, the Northern ports of this Province, and the Northern ports of New Zea^nd, by every steamer leaving for these ports half an hour previous to their advertised hour of departure, due notice of which is given in the Dunedin newspapers a day or two previous. Private Boxes. Fees — For the first year or portion of a year, £2 ; for each succeeding year, £1. The year . commences on the first January. The Post Office is open to the public every lawful day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Times for Postixg Letters. Letters and newspapers prepaid by stamps can be posted at the boxes of the Chief Post Office and leifors only at the receiving houses at any hour of the day or night, Sundays included. Late letters requiring an extra stamp must be posted at the Chief Post Office, and not at the receiving houses. Registered letters must be presented for registration at least one hour prior to the time appointed for closing ship mails. Address of Letteks. Letters occasionally remain a considerable time in the Post Offices, in consequence of their being vaguely addressed to Otago, N.Z., and not bearing the name of the post town in which the person addressed resides. The address, to ensure correct and speedy delivery, should always be full, and if for Dunedin, ihe street, &c. , shoxild be given as accurately as possible. All letters and Book Packets addressed to the United Kingdom, Continent of Europe via United Kingdom, America, and West Indies, will be transmitted invariadly by Panama, unless specially directed to be sent otherwise.
