ROWERS RACE FOR HEAD-OF-RIVER.

EVENTS TO-DAY HAVE CLOSE FINISHES. Some good finishes resulted from the second series of events in the head-of-the-river rowing competition this afternoon. The senior double sculls and the maiden four-oar were decided, and were won by Canterbury and Union respectively. The officials were:—Starter, Mr A. T. Evans; umpire, Mr F. D. Kesteven; judge, Mr D. Lee. A good crowd v/atched the races. Results were as follows: SENIOR DOUBLE SCULLS. First heat: Canterbury (F. Brown, Oborn) 1, Union No. 1 (W. Whittington, L. Byers) 2. Second heat: Avon (C. Stiles, G. Stiles) 3, Union No. 2 (G. Duggan, L. Duggan) 2. FINAL. Canterbury 1 Avon 2 Avon were leading at Cowlishaw’s Corner, but Canterbury came up in a good sprint and won fairly comfortably. MAIDEN FOUR-OAR. First heat: Union (F. Duggan, E Weir, H. Booth, A. Waddell) 1; Canterbury (Stephenson, Bacon, Hill, Moon) 2. Second heat: Avon No. 1 (A. Harley, J. Lane, J. Harley, .T. Brixton) 1; Avon No. 2 (L. Webb, H. Linauze, G. Rushworth, A. Woodham) 2. Final. Union 3 Avon No. 3 2 A good race, with level pegging most of the way. Won by one and a half lengths.
