BUSY TIME ON THE WATERFRONT.

NOT ENOUGH LABOUR AT LYTTELTON. The port presented a busy appearance this morning, nearly all the wharf accommodation being engaged. Vessels in port included the Kahika, loading for Napier and Gisborne. Waihora. with cargo from Calcutta, Wahine, Athenic loading wool and general cargo for London, Waipiata with Auckland cargo to unload', Anglo-Colombian, discharging bulk sulphur from Galvaston, Kiwitea discharging northern cargo and loading for southern ports, the Remuera discharging cargo, Trevorian discharging New York cargo. Breeze loading for the north, and Tees for Chathams. The Union Company announced this morning that labour was short and they could not obtain any labour for the Waipiata or Kahika. As there was urgency in dispatching these two vessels as quickly as possible the Waihora's labour gangs had to be transferred to the Kiwitea and Kahika, while the Waipiata and Waihora lay idle. It was also stated that there was no labour available to coal the Athenic and Kiwitea. The port has been particularly quiet for the past two months, with the exception of a busy week at the end of last month, and local watersiders are looking forward to a better pay-sheet next week. Work could have been given to another hundred men this morning. The position will be better on Monday, as a result of the departure of the Tees, Breeze, Orepuki and Trevorian this evening. Speaking on the question of the shortage, Air J. Flood stated that free labour could only be employed so long as union labour w r as not obtainable, and that free labour must be discharged on union labour being released.
