CITY WILL BE GAY FOR VISIT OF ROYAL PARTY.
SCHEME PREPARED FOR DECORATION OF CATHEDRAL SQUARE. Cathedral Square will be gay with many-coloured electric lights at nighttime during the stay in the city of their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of York, while in the day the effect will be sustained by extensive displays of flags and bunting. Decorating the Square, which is the Government’s part of the local scheme, is in the hands of Mr P. H. Hyndman, Public Works Department foreman. The plan of lighting and decoration has now been settled, and Mr Hyndman has already commenced to prepare for the carrying out of the work. On the west side of the Government buildings, facing the Square, and on the Post Office, an effective scheme of lighting will be carried out. The sides of the Post Office will be outlined in red, white and blue lights, and an electric star will be fixed to the top of the tower. From the tower to the corners of the building streamers of flags and lights will be taken, and on each side there will be a gold crown in lights with the Royal “G.R.” The outstanding effect on the Government buildings will be a Union Jack in coloured lights and a crown of gold light, surmounting the buildings. Red, white and blue lamps will outline the whole face of the offices. On the front of the buildings “ Welcome” will be described in electric light. Flags from the three poles and bunting will also enter into the decorative scheme.
