STREET REPAIRS IN SPREYDON WERE NECESSARY WORK.
CITY COUNCILLOR MAKES STATEMENT. That the City Council was effecting necessary repairs to Redruth Avenue, Bletsoe Avenue and Selwyn Street, which are in the sewerage area for which contracts are about to be let, was the statement made by Mr E. 11. Andrews, chairman of the City Council Works Committee, yesterday. It had been stated that the work was unnecessary in view of the fact that sewerage trenching would soon be done iii the streets. Mr Andrews said that the work had been done with the full knowledge of the City Engineer and the Drainage Board Engineer. The City Engineer had been furnished by the secretary of the Drainage Board with a list of all streets to be trenched in sewerage work. This list covered a period of five years, and, as far as he could gather, no particular notice was given concerning the streets where the repair work was at present being carried out. The contract for sewerage in this area had not yet been let. but next week it might be. Even then, the Drainage Board engineer was not prepared to say when the work would be begun, in one. month or in two. In the meantime the roads had to be kept in a reasonably good condition. That was all that was in the work done in Redruth and Bletsoe Avenues and Selwyn Street. As a matter of fact, a cubic yard of tarred metal was all that was used on the portion of the road to be trenched. The greater portion of the metal had been used in tar-macadamising the corners of streets, which is a permanent work in accordance with the council’s practice, and will not be touched by the sewerage trench. The total amount of tarred metal used on the job was 1£ cubic yards. When the roads began to wear they would develop large and dangerous pot-holes unless they were attended to at once, and even if they had to be trenched within a few weeks it was necessary to keep them safe. The following streets in Spreydon will be reticulated under the sewerage contract which is about to be let:— Taramea, Howard, Simeon, Afhelstan, Everard, -Somerset, Willard. Rosewame, Coronation, Sydney, Rosebery, Springgrove, Cheviot and Selwyn Streets, Redruth, Boulton and Bletsoe Avenues, Simpson’s Lane, and a portion of South Crescent Road from Jerrold to Selwyn Streets.
